Accident on Dark, Windy Highway

Video will be available shortly.

A two- vehicle accident on Highway 65 injures one and backs up traffic for nearly an hour Saturday night. Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash but authorities say the utter darkness surrounding the roadway did not help.

The accident happened shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday night on the windy road leading up to grand mesa. The accident happened when 46-year-old Melvin Barnes of Whitewater, who was driving westbound, veered into the eastbound lanes and collided with a Subaru SUV.

None of the four passengers in the Subaru were injured, but Barnes had to be extracted from his vehicle and sustained a variety of injuries.

Traffic in both directions was at a stand still for nearly an hour. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the Colorado State Patrol says a citation will likely be issued to Barnes.
