The dark plume of smoke from a fire at a Grand Junction salvage yard Monday afternoon could be seen for miles, however, officials say the fire itself was pretty tame.
The flames broke out at the American Salvage Yard on D Rd. around 5:00 p.m., where six or seven junk vehicles caught on fire.
Crews were delayed initially because of a passing train on 7th St. and because there was limited access into the yard as well as no surrounding danger, fire fighters had to approach the fire a little differently.
About 1,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire and despite the dark smoke, no environmental damage is believed to have occurred.
The investigation into the cause is ongoing.
