Sprinkler System Extinguishes Building Fire

The Grand Junction fire department responds to a fire on the second floor of a retirement community just before 6 pm on Sunday Night.

Four units and 15 personnel responded to the Atrium of the Grand Valley. The fire apparently started on a bed in a patients room. The occupant of that room was transported to St. Mary's Hospital to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Fire damage to the building was minimal, but water damages to the building are estimated at $40,000. The fire was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system.

Residents were evacuated to other areas of the building during the fire, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
