Harold Smith, of Grand Junction, will celebrate his 100th birthday Saturday. He has lived in Grand Junction since 1954 and is a Colorado native.
When he came to the western slope he opened Fruitvale Feed and Supply and later Mesa Feed and Hatchery at 200 W. Grand Ave., “I thought I was a big shot when in bought the feed business, and got in the feed business,” says Harold.
Harold has lived a long life but as his daughter Linda Pederson explains, it hasn't been without complications, “He was one of the first people in Colorado to have a heart bypass surgery, that was in 1972; and then on his 87th birthday he had a 5 vessel bypass here at St. Mary's.”
It was Linda's idea to get her father on NBC’s Today Show for his 100th birthday. Harold still doesn’t believe that he will be on national television, “Well I can't believe that, I just assume that wouldn't be true, but if it is I hope it all works out alright,” he says.
Harold is the father of two daughters, five grand children and seven great grand children. He attributes his longevity to good genes and having a beer a day; his favorite is Old Milwaukee or Milwaukee’s Best.
He says all he is wishing for, for his 100th birthday is good friends and good health.
You can see Harold on the today show Tuesday morning, and anyone who wants to celebrate his birthday with him is invited to attend an open house reception from 2-4 Saturday afternoon at First Methodist Church.
