Crews continue to monitor a brush fire on the Bookcliffs that has grown to 40 acres.

The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon in Hunter Canyon, roughly 15 miles north / northeast of Grand Junction.

BLM officials say it's burning in a remote area and is not threatening any structures.

The Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit sent two engines, a single-engine air tanker, an air supervision lead plane, and a helitanker to battle the blaze.

Officials say the 15-an firefighting team has been working the fire since 1:20 p.m. Tuesday and are expected to monitor it overnight.

Officials say the cause of the fire is unknown -- but given the remote and steep area where the fire is burning, they believe a lightning strike hit the area several days ago and caused the brush to start smoldering.
