Traffic Fatalities Up In Mesa County

For the third year in a row traffic deaths statewide have declined; however in Mesa County the numbers are increasing.

In 2006 the number of traffic fatalities in Mesa County increased roughly 25 % over last year. Statewide the number of traffic deaths decreased by 12.2 %.

According to CDOT more than 1/2 of the fatalities were alcohol related, and more than 2/3 were not wearing seatbelts.

Charles Meyer, CDOT's Regional Operations Engineer says the good news is these deaths are preventable, and that's why the organization works to educate the public. But he adds, "the bad news is people continue to make bad choices."

Traffic related deaths have not been this low statewide since 1992.
