In recent weeks two sexually violent predators have come to call the Rescue Mission on South Avenue home. Tommy Lance Wilkerson who has since been arrested, and now Ernest Welton.
The Rescue Mission has been in operation for 23 1/2 years. Mission Founder Keith Bradley says Welton came to the shelter Saturday night, pays three dollars a day in rent, goes to work during the day, and is home by 6:30p.m. for gospel service and dinner. Bradley says the Rescue Mission is the safest place for Welton and the community. Bradley says Welton has to live somewhere and the way he sees it he may as well live at the shelter and not in a residential neighborhood.
The Rescue Mission does not receive any funding from the United Way, the city or the federal government.
