Second Homeless Count Gets Underway

Video will be available shortly.

Over the next 48 hours volunteers will fan out across Mesa County as part of a second recent survey on the homeless people of Colorado.

Beginning Monday evening people at homeless shelters and organizations that provide aid to that population will be asked questions about their current situation and needs for housing. It's expected that more people will be interviewed this time than in the one taken in August of last year.

The August survey showed about 300 homeless people in the Grand Valley. Advocates believe that number--locally and state–wide-- grossly underestimates the homeless problem.

The survey is mandated by the Federal Department Of Housing And Urban Development. 15 million dollars in federal funding to Colorado could be lost if the survey is not done.
