A Colorado Congressman known for his tough stance on illegal immigration says he plans to step down as chairman of a group he founded to push for reform.

Congressman Tom Tancredo started the House Immigration Reform Caucus in 1999. The Republican lawmaker says it's time to focus on his 2008 presidential campaign and pressure other candidates to articulate their stance on illegal immigration.

Last year the caucus played a role in gaining support for the passage of a bill to penalize employers that hire illegal immigrants and subject illegal immigrants in the country to felony charges.
