A Montrose High School student was found dead Saturday more than a thousand feet into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
The discovery was made Saturday morning, after a park ranger noticed 17-year-old Holly St.John's vehicle at the Gunnison Point Overlook parking lot.
The ranger also noticed the car on Friday, during a star gazing party, so it's assumed the girl fell sometime between 4 p.m. Friday when the visitor center closed and Saturday morning.
A helicopter from Durango was brought in to retrieve the St.John's body, which landed about 600 feet from canyon floor.
Rescue crews worked Saturday afternoon for about two hours, trying to move maneuver the body through the snow, ice and loose rock to the bottom of the canyon for a safe landing zone for the helicopter.
However, due to safety precautions, the efforts were suspended until Sunday morning.
