After an unsuccessful attempt Saturday, the body of a Montrose High School student was retrieved from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Sunday.
According to the National Park Service, the body of the 17-year-old girl, whose name is being withheld because of her age, was discovered Saturday morning 1,200 feet below the Gunnison Point Overlook. With the help of a helicopter, the girl's body was removed early Sunday by three park rangers who spent the night with the body near the bottom of the canyon after the recovery operation was suspended Saturday due to darkness.
The National Park Service is investigating the incident and the Montrose County Coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of death.
