The City of Grand Junction has a project underway that will help eliminate a flood threat to nearly 400 properties in the Grand Valley.
About 20 years ago, FEMA made an error when mapping the Ranchmen's Ditch area which runs from Walker Field Airport to the Colorado River by Mesa Mall.
To combat the threat should a 100 year flood occur, next month the city will start construction on two detention basins in the Ranchmen's Ditch drainage area located east of Walker Field. Also, three 78 inch storm drain pipes will be installed in the south parking lots of Mesa Mall, and run north to the Barnes and Noble.
Phase two, which will begin this November, will include the construction of three more storm drains. The property owners that could be affected were advised to purchase flood insurance.
