Monday marks the federal holiday, Presidents' Day. For most Americans it is a day off from the daily grind and a chance to get some good buys at Presidents' Day Sales around the country.

The first formal observation of Presidents' Day took place in 1865 as a way to celebrate George Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday because he is also born in February.

President Washington is known as being the founding father of the United States. His presence continues with Americans today with his picture on the $1 bill.

President Lincoln is the 16th President of the United States. He is known for his honesty and leading the country through the Civil War.

In 1968, legislation passed that made observation for Washington's birthday to occur on the third Monday in February, instead of the actual date of his birthday, which is February 22nd. Abraham Lincoln's birthday is February 12th.
