The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office says it has more questions than answers after human remains were found in a remote part of the county.
Officials say a human skull and other bones were removed from the mountainous Bear Creek area, just north of Somerset.
They say at this time, the remains have been turned over to the Gunnison County Coroner and a team of anthropologists from Western State College, who will work to identify them.
Officials say they know little about who the bones came from or how long they had been in the area where they were found. But in a telephone conversation this afternoon, the Sheriff's Office told 11 News the Coroner reported to them that he initially believed the remains were those of a female.
Investigators say the bones were discovered in an area where the underbrush and growth was nearly three feet high. Officials say deputies will return to the area later in the week to see if they can find any additional clues.
The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office says it is cross-checking missing persons cases in the area and statewide as part of the investigation.
The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says it has not been contacted by Gunnison County in connection to this case.
