For more than a year the Grand Junction Police Department, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and Mesa State College have been working together to form the academy. The entities say the Peace Officer Standards Training Academy would greatly benefit Western Colorado.

Right now the academy is still awaiting final approval. It's academic courses have been approved, but the curriculum on arrest control and the site is still needs to be approved. Officials hope to know the decision by early April. The academic classes would be held at mesa state's Tillman Bishop Campus.
