School administrators from two local high schools are trying to figure out how elk urine ended up spread all over the stands at Stocker Stadium before Saturday night's high school rivalry game between Grand Junction and Fruita Monument High Schools.

Fruita Monument parent Monika Tuell says as a spectator on the concrete stands side of the stadium, the smell was nearly unbearable, “we had gotten word that some students from (Grand ) Junction High School had used their own personal urine as well as elk urine and poured it all over the bleachers and all over the stands on the Fruita Monument side.”

Tool says the stench was so strong, at times so strong, you could taste it.

Grand Junction Parks Supervisor Eddie Mort says his crews worked for hours before the game to clean it up, but it wasn't enough, “once you add water to it, it really enhances the urine smell, the ammonia smell in it, and, it's not nice, it's no pleasant, it's not pleasant for anybody to sit around or be around".

Mort says city crews are now searching for a stronger chemical to get the smell out, and unfortunately, all incurred costs so far will be billed to the taxpayer.

Grand Junction High School Principal Jon Bilbo says among other repercussions, whoever is responsible should pay for the clean up, “I think we just like the Fruita fans, think that it's a pretty despicable act, and it's not acceptable, it's certainly not going to be condoned”.

But Bilbo also says just who is responsible is still not clear, “right now, I’m not willing to say it's one of our students”.

Bilbo says he's investigating the issue, but not promising immediate results.

He is asking everyone to keep an open ear, and try to find out as much information as possible.

Parent Monika Tuell says it was a disappointment, and a disgrace, but hopes what happened off the field won't shine poorly on what happened on it, “you know all the players that were here, they worked so hard at what they do and they do it for the students, for themselves, for their families, for school pride, and I think you take away from that and I think that's a shame, I really do".

Officials with the Grand Junction Police Department say because it occurred on city property, whoever is responsible could face criminal charges.
