Lawmaker Says Parolees Should Not be Able to Vote

A Grand Junction lawmaker is fighting to stop felons on parole from being allowed to vote.

Senate Bill 83 is an all–purpose clean–up of the state's elections procedures and Senator Josh Penry says an amendment that would allow convicted felons to vote has no place in it.

The bill was amended by Senate President Pro–tem Peter Groff. Penry and Attorney General John Suthers say the amendment is unconstitutional and goes against a Supreme Court ruling that states parolees can't vote.

The bill has already passed two readings in the Senate and a third reading is scheduled for Monday.
