Gingrich Acknowledges Affair During Clinton Impeachment

Washington (AP) Even while he was leading the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was having an extramarital affair.

Gingrich makes the admission in an interview with a conservative Christian group.

A transcript of the interview was provided to the Associated Press by Focus on The Family. Its founder, James Dobson, interviewed Gingrich. It will air Friday.

Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, says there are times he's ``fallen short of God's standards.''

Gingrich divorced his second wife in 2000 after his attorneys acknowledged his relationship with his current wife, Callista Bisek. She's a former congressional aide more than 20 years younger than he is. His first wife has said Gingrich discussed divorce terms with her while she was recuperating in the hospital from cancer surgery.
