Mailbox Vandalism Spreads In Grand Valley

Video will be available shortly.

Several areas of the Grand Valley were victimized over the weekend by vandals going after a common target--mailboxes.

The official numbers have not been confirmed, however, law enforcement officers say simply that there have been numerous incidents from Palisade to Fruita.

Methods have included the traditional baseball bat to explosive devices, which not only cause further safety risks but stiffer penalties as well.

"(Explosive devices) of course enhances the damage to mailboxes, making it a felony with possession and or use of an incendiary device," Sgt. Chris Franz with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office said.

Because vandalizing mailboxes is a federal offense, the local postal inspector is also conducting an investigation and anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact law enforcement immediately.
