A transient man is in serious condition following a shooting that has Grand Junction police still searching for answers.

The gunshot wound 57-year-old Victor Fronk suffered came from a small caliber weapon, but at this point it is unknown who pulled the trigger.

The transient camp turned crime scene is located west of the Grand Avenue bridge and was sealed off quickly as police arrived on scene.

Police do not currently know where Fronk is from and although the weapon was recovered, police say it will be difficult to determine if it was handled after the shooting occurred.

Fronk was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital with the gunshot wound to the chest and police are also still trying to determine how to treat the case.

"We have unconfirmed reports that this was an attempted suicide, but we'll treat is as an attempted homicide until we prove otherwise," Grand Junction Police spokesperson Linda Bowman said.

Several witnesses were taken in for questioning and make sure to keep tuned to 11 News Colorado for the latest developments on this story.
