Denver (AP) State lawmakers will try again this week to pass a bill allowing police to pull drivers over for not wearing seat belts.
Under current law, drivers and passengers can be ticketed, but only if they are pulled over for another offense.
The bill will be heard Tuesday in the House Transportation and Energy committee.
Democrat Joe Rice of Littleton says his senate bill will save 30-to-50 lives a year.
He estimates the proposal also would save the state an estimated $72 million over the next ten years in medical costs.
Republican Ron May of Colorado Springs says the state cannot make people protect themselves.
