The DeBeque Marshall's Office was broken into and now authorities are worried about what was stolen. Officials are being tight lipped about was taken, but according to published reports it includes an automatic rifle.

On Monday DeBeque Town Marshall Gary Foss reported to work as usual. He says it would have been a typical day of fingerprinting and keeping the peace, except that he noticed some things missing. Foss thought another deputy had stored the items someplace else, but that wasn't the case. His office had been broken into.

Foss won't comment about what was stolen, but according to published reports it included an automatic assault rifle, tasers and cartridges to power them and ammunition magazines. Foss says he's worried about who might have the stolen goods.

Foss believes the thief or thieves made their way into Marshal's Office using a side door which is secured by common household locks. Now his office is looking at ways to beef up security. They're changing the locks and installing more.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation. But they too won't say what's missing, because it could jeopardize the case.

If you have any information about this crime you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 241-STOP.
