Hiker Airlifted From Mt. Garfield

It wasn't the typical way one hiker got off the trail Saturday on Mt. Garfield.

According to the Palisade Fire Department, around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, a 52-year-old man who was hiking lost his footing suffering a possible broken ankle.

Mesa County Search and Rescue members and fire officials hiked up the trail to the location where the man was injured. There authorities splinted his ankle and then search and rescue crews transported him further up the mountain so he could be transported to the hospital by helicopter.

Authorities want to remind those who plan on hiking the trails around the Grand Valley to make sure you are physically fit and to bring plenty of water.
