80 Bales Of Hay Catch Fire Causing Traffic Delays

A truckload of 80 bales of hay ignited on Interstate 70 closing one lane of traffic for more than two hours early Monday morning.

Fire officials say they suspect a loose safety chain may have caused the hay to ignite. The fire started just after midnight on Interstate 70 near mile marker one.

Fire officials believe the blaze started from some sparks caused by the loose chain that may have been dragging along the highway. The driver of the truck was able to detach the trailer with the burning hay
and the Lower Valley Fire Protection District was able to put it out using a water tender truck. Some nearby brush also caught on fire but crews were able to quickly put it out as well.

The right hand lane on the Interstate was closed until about 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.
