DELTA, Colo. (KKCO) - Tuesday Delta voters approved an alternate route which will detour traffic away from Main street.

Gayle Wilson is the owner of Johnny Ray's Main Street Deli. She's been on the fence about detouring traffic away from Main street. "I've been thinking about it," she says.

But when it came to the vote, Wilson ended up saying 'yes' to no traffic.

"I think it will help Delta grow and I don't think it will hurt downtown," says Wilson.

Delta residents passed the alternate route by an overwhelming 77 percent, but there are a few business owners on Main street concerned about losing profits from people passing by.

"We do have some concerns about the truckers. If they take the route then they won't be going through town to shop and use the businesses," says Linda Sanchez of the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

Sanchez says although Main Street may lose some business, it will also gain some from locals who are afraid to use Main street because of the overwhelming traffic.

"There's others that would come back and say there's no place to park and it's too busy anyhow," says Sanchez.

"A project like this will alleviate a lot of the traffic and we feel it will enhance the shopping downtown," says Glen Black, Delta Director of Community Development.

He says this project will be positive all around.

"We're talking about a $30 million project so anytime you have that kind of money being spent in Delta County, it definitely helps with jobs and revenue," says Black.

For Wilson, she's happy with the decision to support the alternate route and is by no means concerned about losing any business.

"I think if people want to walk downtown in Delta, they'll make that effort to do so," says Wilson.
