GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)- A mother is sending out a warning tonight after her 12 year old son was scammed at a Halloween dance party at the Bookcliff Activity Center.
Amber Martinez called 11 News and after some research, it looks as though they are not the only victims.
The Martinez family say his name is Derek Dause. A man by the same name and with the same business, Hollywood Soundz Entertainment, has had 4 law suits filed against him in Grand Junction, and they include things like unpaid advertising in a wedding magazine, ripping off a lady for a booth at a fake wedding show, and asking other dj's to cover for him and never paying them.
12 year old, Michael martinez, won a dance off at a halloween party, and his prize was a 15 dollar I-Tunes gift card, "so I tried to activate it and it didn't do nothing."
His mom agrees that when they "got online went to activate it and it was invalid."
Michael's mother Amber says it's upsetting that the card was not redeemable especially since there was a $5 charge to attend the halloween party. Amber then took to the internet to investigate, "I got online and Igoogled Hollywood Soundz and a bunch of ripoff reports come up on which were a lot of people he had owed money."
On ripoffreport.com, Derek Dause is accused of taking a $300 deposit to be a wedding dj and then never provided music.
On that same site, a DJ company calls him a liar and scam artist, saying he asked them to cover a gig and then never paid up.
The company filed a lawsuit against Dause and won.
And the complaints don't end there.
We knocked on the apartment door where his business was listed to get Dause's side of the story but no one answered.
And calls to a number listed for Hollywood Soundz were met with a busy tone.
For the Martinez family they just hope everyone else will catch on, and just grateful it was only a $15 I Tunes card.
The Better Business Bureau tells 11 news they have no complaints on Dause or Hollywood Soundz but says after doing its own research says people should be weary of doing business with him.
They also say if you ever have a complaint against a business call them to report it or go online to ripoffreport.com so others don't get scammed.
