GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) - Potentially big news for the oil and gas industry, Williams Gas is adding three new drill rigs next year on the Western Slope.

While officials told 11 News any investment in the area is good news, these new drills are not a sign of better times for oil and gas.

Williams is planning to add two drills in Garfield County and one more in Rio Blanco County.

When those are complete there will be 43 drills in the state.

But at the beginning of the year there were nearly 100.

Mesa County Commissioner Craig Meis tells 11 News the new rigs are a good thing for the area because it will create jobs.

But until bigger companies add rigs, the local energy industry is still in a big downturn.

Williams estimates each rig is an investment of about $150 million. They hope to have them in place by the end of next year.
