The Mesa County Sheriff's Office is investigating an alleged sexual assault on a child.

Authorities are being tight lipped about the incident but say they are actively working on a case involving a 12-year-old Clifton girl. Officials add that the investigation is evolving rapidly and hope to have the case closed soon.

One witness tells 11 News that the young girl was beat up by the suspect who tried to rape her. Then the victim reportedly jumped out a window to escape. She was transported to the hospital.

Schools in the area were alerted to the situation and some did place themselves on voluntary lock-down.
