Colorado Woman, 78, Safely Lands Plane in Missouri Field

NEW MELLE, Mo. (AP) A cut below the nose is all 78-year-old Emma Hanner of Denver has to show for being forced to make an emergency landing in her small plane in a Missouri field.

The propeller on Hanner's two-seater stopped in mid-air yesterday, forcing the grandmother to bring it down in a farm field near New Melle -- about 35 miles west of St. Louis.

She recently moved to Denver from her previous home in North Carolina to be closer to her children. But a few days ago, she went east to ferry her plane back to the Mile High City.

Hanner was preparing to make a fuel stop when the engine gave out.

She describes the plane as being like a Cessna 150, but with a more powerful engine.

Hanner says she's never had to make an emergency landing in nearly four decades of flying.
