Ignacio, Colo. (AP) The Durango Herald reports that the Southern Ute tribe has told a construction company to take an American flag off a construction crane.
The crane is being used to build a casino on the reservation.
The tribal council decided earlier this year to forbid the construction company from flying the flag, which has blown off the crane before. Members did not return phone calls seeking comment.
But tribal member Sage Remington says the tribe is a sovereign nation, and only it and its leaders can decide to fly a flag.
The construction company asked for permission to fly both the American flag and the tribe's flag, but the newspaper says the company was asked not to fly any flags from the crane.
American flags are still flying elsewhere on the reservation.
