Fort Lewis, Wash. (AP) A 19-year-old military policeman from Colorado Springs is dead after an explosion at a security checkpoint in Iraq.

The Pentagon says Private First Class Jeffrey A. Avery died Monday from wounds suffered while he conducted checkpoint operations north of Baghdad.

He was part of the 571st Military Police Company, 504th Military Police Battalion, 42nd Military Police Brigade, based at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Avery joined the Army in 2005, and arrived at Fort Lewis last May.

He's the ninth military policeman from the post, and the 99th service member from the base to die in the Iraq war.
