Mayors Want Five County Commissioners

The county's November ballot could ask voters whether they want five county commissioners instead of just three.

Palisade Mayor Doug Edwards says mayors in the five cities in Mesa County including Fruita, Palisade, Grand Junction, Collbran and DeBeque feel it's time to increase the number of commissioners from three to five.

On Tuesday night, Palisade Trustees adopted a resolution in support of pushing for the increase. they also specified that they want the new commissioners elected by districts and not at–large.

The question could make it onto the ballot in two ways. One if citizens got enough petitions, and the other if the current commissioners approved it.

Commissioner Steve Aquafresca says there are many substantial costs that would come with expanding the commission, and that's why Palisade's mayor says it's important for voters to know what they're voting for.

The mayor of Palisade says there's nothing wrong the current commissioners, but he feels five would give the county better representation.
