Authorities say alcohol played a role in Sunday's fatal rollover accident near Collbran.
The victim of the crash has been identified as Richard Schlagel of Johnstown.
Officials say Schlagel was not wearing his seat belt when he lost control of his truck after turning a sharp left curve. They say he over corrected and landed upside down in a canal.
He died at the scene. According to the Mesa County Coroner, Schlagel died of head injuries and had alcohol in his system.
The Colorado State Patrol is still investigating the accident but say speed may have also been a factor. The speed limit where Schlagel went off the road is 40 mph.
Schlagel's dog did survive the accident and was taken to a veterinarian emergency room. He did not receive any injuries and is being cared for by Mesa County Animal Services until someone in Schlagel's family can pick him up.
