Woman Attacked, Wildlife Officers Shoot and Kill a Bear

Conifer, Colo. (AP) A woman from Conifer survived an attack by a small bear and wildlife officials shot and killed a bear.

The 38-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was checking on her barking dog when she came upon the bear on her porch Monday morning. Division of Wildlife officials says food placed in snow banks during a power outage and unsecured garbage cans in a shed may have attracted the bear.

A wildlife officer who followed some tracks leading away from the home came upon three bears -- one which charged the officer. It was unclear whether the dead bear is the same animal that attacked the woman.

Wildlife officials say the woman's ten-year-old witnessed the attack and estimated the bear to be about 60 pounds. The woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.
