About $100,000 worth of illegal drugs are off the streets after a weekend traffic stop on I–70.
The Colorado State Patrol pulled over an SUV with California plates on Interstate 70 Sunday morning for a traffic violation and after the three occupants were taken into custody., a search of the vehicle yielded 43 lbs. of marijuana and 3.5 lbs. of cocaine.
32-year-old Elmer Gregorio Mendoza and Alfredo Maya Hernandez were arrested for trafficking and with I–70 being a well known corridor for smuggling drugs as well as people, agencies say it's an ongoing cooperative effort between the CSP, DEA and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
While most seizures happen during a traffic stop, motorists are encouraged to report anything suspicious, including overloaded vehicles and drivers who are either going well above or below the speed limit.
