Colorado motorists who experience pain at the pump every time they fill up now have even more of a reason to fume about fuel prices.

AAA Colorado says gasoline prices statewide have broken their all-time record-high price for a gallon of regular unleaded. The organization's fuel gage report says motorists are paying an average of $3.12.That's $0.29 more than two weeks ago, and $0.15 higher than last week.

It makes Colorado the 11th most expensive state in the country for gas. Last week, the state ranked 15th. This is the 14th consecutive week that the average price has climbed in Colorado. The price of gas has gone up steadily since January 31st, when a gallon cost $2.09.

To get more out of each tank of gasoline, experts recommend driving sensibly. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by five percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money. In addition, observing the speed limit will really help with fuel economy. While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. As a rule of thumb, you can assume that each five mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. Observing the speed limit is also safer.
