Lawyer Says Committee Recommends Churchill Suspension

Denver (AP) A faculty committee has recommended that University of Colorado Professor Ward Churchill be suspended for one year rather than fired, according to his attorney.

David Lane says he doesn't think Churchill should be disciplined at all but says at least committee members are moving in the “right direction.'' he says the recommendation will make it harder for CU President Hank Brown to fire Churchill, an ethnic studies professor.

Churchill has been under fire ever since an essay he wrote surfaced. In the essay he likened World Trade Center victims to Nazis.

The committee gave its report to Brown last week regarding its hearing on alleged research misconduct by Churchill. It wasn't released to the public.

Brown has until the end of the month to decide what to do next.
