Denver (AP) A soldier from Aurora who his family says was a day away from taking a two-week leave so he could be home to witness the birth of his daughter has died in Iraq.

The Defense Department says 27-year-old Sergeant Ryan J. Baum died Friday in Karmah of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
