West Point, Utah (AP) A replica of a Civil War-era rifle that had been displayed in a classroom all year caused a lockdown Thursday when the student who created it was taking it home.
A West Point Junior High School teacher was impressed with the student's work and asked if the project could be displayed at the beginning of the year. With the school year coming to a close the student was taking the gun home.
As he carried the replica to his mother's car yesterday morning, a school bus driver reported a student with a gun. The school went into lockdown for about 45 minutes.
Many parents were alerted to the lockdown by text messages they received from their children inside the school.
Nearby elementary schools were also locked down until it was determined there was no threat.
