GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Every week the Mesa County Library holds computer classes that help bring students of all ages up to speed.

Computers are everywhere you look these days. They're a portal for news, jobs, music, and communication.

If you're fluent in “computerese,” you might take your knowledge for granted. "I think there is that assumption that everybody knows how to use a computer, and it's really not true," says Nancy Trimm, the director of Reference and Instructional Services at the Library.

“I don’t even know how to turn one on,” says one student who attended Wednesday morning’s Basic Computer Skills: Part 1 class.

And that's why the Mesa County Library holds a series of computer classes every month. These classes teach everything from computer basics to navigating the Internet.

"It transfers to all ages, from the young to the older folks," Trimm says.

The library has been offering these classes for the past two years. When they first started, Trimm says, "We largely saw a lot of retirees and older folks who really wanted to get in contact with family."

Then as word spread about the free instruction, they’ve seen people of all ages, and particularly some who want to brush up on their Excel or word processor skills to get a better job.

The free classes are open to anyone, and are offered at branches throughout the county, including in Clifton, Fruita, Palisade and Orchard Mesa.
