Western Colorado 211 says its calls show more families are concerned about keeping their heat on this holiday season than worrying about toys.
The help line says more people have been calling for help with their heating bills than trying to find food or toys for Christmas.
211 has already given out 1,680 referrals for the Low Energy Assistance Program or LEAP.
Charity Brockman, the director of the 211 help line, says a growing number of the callers are at disconnect level or have already been disconnected. Some months, the callers at disconnect make up about half the callers for LEAP.
In 2008, 211 only gave out 1,027 LEAP referrals. 211 expects to keep taking LEAP calls through December 31 this year, and will continue to take calls until the program ends April 30, 2010.
You may qualify for Leap if you're an individual and bring home $1600 or less a month. You also qualify for LEAP if you are a family of four that makes just over $3,000 a month.
The average LEAP benefit per household per winter is around $350 with a maximum of $900.
