The federal government is called in to help fund and battle the New Castle Fire near Glenwood Springs.
Just after noon on Wednesday, FEMA approved Colorado's request for federal funding to help with the costs.
The New Castle Fire has now grown to about 1800 acres and is burning less than a half mile from hundreds of homes.
On Wednesday four helicopters, two single air tankers and two heavy air tankers made regular drops on the fire.
About 221 people from 20 different local and federal agencies are fighting the blaze, and 60 more people are expected to arrive soon.
Two firefighters have been injured in the line of duty; one was treated for heat exhaustion, and the other for a hand injury.
Officials say the fire is 50 percent contained.
