MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO) - Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap has awarded the Medal of Valor to deputies and a commendation to dispatchers for their work during the incident that left a Montrose Police sergeant dead and two officers wounded.

Deputies Matt Taramarcaz and Ben Halsey received the awards Friday during a ceremony in Montrose. Dunlap presented the medals and said, "I am humble and proud to be associated with the professional group of people that we have at the Montrose County Sheriff's Office. this event is chilling, heart-breaking and hurts to the core. This family, our family, is proud to say that the actions of all those who responded to this tragic incident brought credit to themselves and the Montrose County Sheriff's Office."

Dispatchers Trevor Blackman, Cheryl Hill and Charles Long received Commendation for their work the night Sgt. David Kinternecht was killed and Officers Rodney Ragsdale and Larry Witte while responding to a domestic violence incident. During the ceremony Dunlap said, "At times like this, we have to reach deep inside ourselves and continue to do our job in the most adverse conditions. Word can never express what these three had to endure that night knowing that three people you know personally have just been shot."
