Grand Junction gets first of new weather stations
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service are planning some big upgrades to help make weather data more accurate.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service are planning some big upgrades to help make weather data more accurate.
A new network of stations called the US Historical Climatology Network-Modernization is currently under construction. The project began with pilot stations in the southwest. Grand Junction was one of the first, our station is located on the Monument. The plan is for a grid of stations spaced more closely together, away from modernization that focus mainly on temperature and precipitation.
"They will be more reliable. With automation it's hard to go wrong, you won't have to worry about a person misreading their measurement and things like that. It's going to be a good standard to establish a baseline with," says Data Acquisitions and Program Manager with the National Weather Service John Kyle.
About 1,000 stations will be assembled nationwide over the next few years.
