TOKYO (NBC) - An investigation is underway after a bizarre discovery in Japan.

Engineers at Tokyo International Airport on Sunday discovered the body of a frozen man in the landing gear bay of a flight arriving from New York’s JFK Airport.

Police are still investigating the identity of the man, believed to be an unidentified stowaway.

Delta Flight 59 traveled 12 hours at a maximum altitude 32,800 feet where temperatures in the landing gear bay are believed to reach minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit.

The man, believed to have died of exposure, due to the cold and lack of oxygen, was wearing only jeans and a light long-sleeved shirt

Investigators are checking how he may have evaded security.
