Water Safety Statutes Are On The Books

Mesa County Search and Rescue Teams have been busy recently, as five people have drowned in area rivers in just the last two months.

Go to any entry way along the Gunnison or Colorado River and you’ll likely find signage promoting safety, but there are some statutes on the books as well.

Boaters and rafters found without a life jacket can be fined up to $100, and if caught drinking fines can reach up to $1,000.

But a lack of manpower prohibits the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office from consistent enforcement.

From water safety experts to police, everyone says ultimately the best enforcement comes from within.
