Deputies Patrol To Save Lives

This year has been one of the worst years for water related deaths. In just seven months there have been seven deaths in area waterways.

In 2006 there were a total of five deaths in the canals and rivers. We have already exceeded that this year. So now sheriff deputies are taking their road patrols into the rivers.

Norma Mestas with the Mesa County Sheriff Department says, "Since we have had such a huge increase in water related deaths this year, it's come to our attention that this is something that we need to be focusing on more than in past years."

The deputies will be out when the resources are available. Their goal is to make a presence and make themselves available if anyone is in trouble or taking part in dangerous activities.
