An unidentified man armed with a gun has been shot and killed outside the office of Colorado Governor Bill Ritter.

On Monday afternoon the gunman reportedly walked into the Capitol saying he was there to take over state government. When he refused orders to drop the gun a member of the governor's detail opened fire, leaving the man dead. The shots were heard throughout the capitol where Senator Josh Penry was in a meeting.

Senator Penry says, "There's a lot of construction going on in the capitol so we didn't thing anything of it. We walked outside and some tourists said that someone had been shot. There was the assailant laying on the ground and blood was around him."

Police are not releasing the identify of the gunman at this time as investigations continue. A spokesman for Ritter says he was in the building at the time and was not injured.
