Lightning Sparks Reeder Mesa Fire

A handful of homes near Whitewater were spared Saturday as crews were able to quickly get a handle on a wildfire on Reeder Mesa.

Four different fire agencies, including Land's End and the Bureau of Land Management were dispatched to the fire off of Reeder Mesa Road around 5 p.m., about six miles east of Whitewater.

A dry lightning strike is believed to have caused the blaze which blackened about 200 acres.

A reverse 911 call was made to urge residents in nearby homes to evacuate, but no homes were damaged by the flames.

And while knocked down fairly quickly, the dry cheat grass along with the weather played a factor in its rapid spread.
