The storm that dumped rain and lit up the skies over the Grand Valley is being blamed for starting a fire at the Mesa County Landfill.

Crews were still working this afternoon spraying charred piles with water tankers. Heavy machinery was brought in to spread the compost and extinguish any hot-spots. The fire started at around seven o'clock Sunday night. The compost caught fire and high winds during the storm spread the flames from one compost pile to another.
